If you feel discomfort or notice changes with your orthodontic appliance, don't worry – most situations can be temporarily managed at home until you consult with Dr. Nora Stojanac.
| Situation | What is happening? | How to handle it? |
|---|---|---|
| Loose Bracket | Bracket detaches from tooth and remains on wire or falls off completely. | If on wire, cover with wax to prevent soft tissue irritation. If detached completely, save in a pouch and bring to your next visit. |
| Archwire Shifting | Archwire slides out of slot on one side. | Try to place the wire back into the bracket slot using tweezers. If it pokes, cover with wax. |
| Wire Dislodged from Molar Tube | Wire slides out of back ring/tube. | If poking your cheek, carefully guide it back into the tube with tweezers. If unsuccessful, bend excess wire under the tube and cover with wax. |
| Poking Wire | Wire end scratches cheek or tongue. | Dry area with a cotton swab and apply a ball of orthodontic wax over the wire end for a protective barrier. |
| Mucosal Sores | Metal parts irritate soft tissues. | Apply wax regularly on irritating parts and rinse mouth with mild sage solution or warm salt water to accelerate healing. |
Note: Temporary solutions are just that – temporary. Although wax helps with irritation, it is necessary to schedule a visit to professionally resolve the issue and ensure smooth treatment continuation.
